Ceremony

Deciding where to hold your ceremony is one of the first steps toward planning your dream wedding. A backyard ceremony maximizes space while capitalizing on outdoor beauty. That being said, a backyard ceremony requires a bit of yard preparation. In the months leading up to your big day, consider taking some steps to make your yard look and feel great. This might include weeding, planting flowers, and getting rid of old, unnecessary items. The sooner you start the clean-up process, the less overwhelming it will be.

Next, consider adding a few special features to make the space beautiful. Building an arbor or pergola for the occasion is a great way to create a visual focal point. This type of professionally built trellis costs between $400 and $900 for materials and labor. If you are looking for a lower-cost option, prefabricated models range from $10 to $100. Once your trellis is built, you can add lights, ribbons, or floral features to match your theme. You may also want to invest in a few additional items such as a fountain, pond, or waterfall feature.

Reception

After a wedding ceremony, guests typically gather for a reception featuring food, drinks, dancing, and speeches. Because of the multi-purpose nature of the reception area, it is often necessary to get creative with your space. A common backyard reception layout involves having the dining tables on the grass and a dance floor either in the middle or to the side. While tables can go on the grass, dancing is often better suited for a hard surface. Because of this, you may want to research some dance floor options. You can even make a dance floor using recycled wooden pallets and plywood. With some simple black paint, you can transform the structure into a chic, classic dance floor. If there is a chance of rain, consider options for covering your space. Large tents can be rented for a minimal cost, and you can decorate these with lights, white fabric drapes, and floral arrangements.

Inside Your Home

Now that you have the outdoor area taken care of, it’s time to prep inside your home. To begin, visualize what the indoor area will be used for. Many at-home weddings use the indoor space for a staging area, guest quarters, and food and drink preparation. If your home is going to be a staging area, ensure the bathrooms are set up for diverse usage. Having plenty of soap, shampoo, and towels will ensure your guests are able to get ready in comfort. You might also consider adding a few extra items to maximize the guest experience -- makeup wipes, shaving cream, perfume, Q-tips, and a sewing-kit are just a few low-cost, high-impact items that will make your guests feel right at home. These items will also be highly valued if you intend to use your home as guest quarters for family and friends. If your home will be a preparation area for food and/or drinks, ensure the space is clear of clutter. Also, an extra table, as well as serving trays, may come in handy.

Planning for your wedding should be fun and exciting, not stressful and frustrating. If you want to make your backyard wedding spectacular, consider some of the recommendations above. Congratulations on your soon-to-be wedding!
